So, you are getting ready to start IVF treatments. IVF on its own comes with a mixed bag of emotions. You may be feeling excited, overwhelmed, and overall stressed. This IS an exciting time, but the waiting, anticipation, and wondering can be nerve-wracking and worrisome. Because of this, you will need to have a strong support system by your side, especially if you are working! A million questions come to mind. How will I be able to take the necessary steps to start a family and keep up at work? I’m already so busy, where will I find the time to attend the blood test appointments, ultrasounds, and manage all the medication? Will my employer understand and support my decision to undergo IVF treatments? If you’re anything like the most of us, the list of questions goes on, and on, and on. Don’t worry though, if that’s possible. We have put together some tips on how to manage IVF while working that will help to find the balance you are seeking.
- Plan Ahead
We know this one is obvious but take the time to create a schedule or timeline so you are prepared. Underestimating could come back and bite you later. It’s always better to allow for more time than not enough. Click here for a sample IVF calendar.
- Be Honest
Trying to keep your IVF a secret at work is so hard and will almost always result in a slip-up. As hard as it may be, be honest. Your employer and colleagues might even surprise you with their amount of support. You need as many people on your team as you can get and not people whispering about your absences behind your back. Trust us!! Give as much prior notice as possible. This will show that you are respectful of your employer’s time and that you appreciate their kindness and are not abusing it.
- Organize Your Workload
When you are at work prioritize by importance. Creating a checklist will be very helpful in keeping your wondering mind focused and stop you from falling behind. If possible stay late, work weekends or even take some work home in the attempt to get ahead, prior to starting IVF.
- Find Support
Join some type of support group. There will be questions, trust us, and having someone who is going through IVF or has in the past will be of great value. Look for a local support group or even a Facebook or Instagram group (this may be more convenient since you are already spread thin). We would love for you to be a part of the Starfish Infertility Community, join our Facebook and Instagram now! Having a family member or friend that you can talk to regularly and check in with is another great option. No matter what you decide having someone positive in your life is a must.
- Take Care of YOU
This is the MOST important. If you are not doing well the rest will fall apart. Make sure you don’t skip lunch; with the extra appointments this is easy to do. Make sure you are nourishing yourself properly. Bring food to work and schedule a lunch break and always have a water bottle handy. It is important to stay hydrated. You may also need to say no to certain extras that you may have taken on before. Take time for your self and listen to your body. Remember to BREATH and keep the ideal outcome in mind. Don’t let the process overtake the joy that is to come. We hope you find these tips helpful along your journey with IVF treatment.]]>
